About Jujuya

It is a tradition in Japan on special occasions such as New Years Day, to give a gift of money in an envelope that has written on the outside of it the Kanji character "Ju Ju" which means happiness and best wishes. It is the hope and intention of Executive chef / co-owner "MAKO" Tanaka to create such a place where one enters with joyful expectations and leaves having experienced the happiness that comes from communing with family and friends over a meal prepared from the heart.

Located at the top of the hill in Rolling Hills Estates at the Mall at the Peninsula, JuJuya offers affordable fine dining cuisine in a fresh casual contemporary setting. It has the comfortable feel of a neighborhood Restaurant while fast becoming a foodie destination place.

Inspired by his native Japanese culinary roots, along with the many years of experience working at the helm of some the finest restaurants in the world namely Spago, Chinois on Main, and MAKO in Beverly Hills. Chef Makoto Tanaka aims to share with you his artistry in creating and combining uniquely flavorful sauces and ingredients that unobtrusively reveal the purity, simplicity, and beauty of the premium quality seafood, meat and produce he features on the menu.

JuJuya is an Izakaya style-dining restaurant wherein sharing and sampling a variety of different dishes is fun and highly recommended. The bar offers an extensive array of beers on tap including some locally brewed, as well as wine and sake.

Chef Mako (Makoto Tanaka)

Chef "Mako" (Makoto Tanaka) Bio: Makoto Tanaka's culinary roots began as a boy working in his family's restaurant in Kyoto Japan. In 1979 he immigrated to Los Angeles where he eventually landed a job with Wolfgang Puck to help open Chinois on Main.

After 3 years he was offered an opportunity to become the executive chef of China Grill in New York, and introduce Asian fusion style cuisine on the East coast. He spent several years there, and then once again returned to Los Angeles where he manned the kitchens as the executive chef of the original Spago on Sunset from 1989 through 1993, and from 1993 through 1999 as executive chef at Chinois on Main.

During his tenure at Chinois, Makoto began to define himself as one of the country's most innovative Asian fusion style chefs. While he was at the helm the restaurant enjoyed many accolades and was voted the #1 restaurant in Los Angeles by Zagat several consecutive years.

In January 2000 Makoto opened his own restaurant in Beverly Hills called "Mako." Here he enjoyed more critical success most notably receiving 27 points from Zagat and being named the #1 Asian fusion restaurant, as well as being hailed as one of the Best restaurants in Los Angeles from Los Angeles Magazine. " Mako" was one of the first restaurants in Los Angeles to offer "izakaya" style menu where guests can graze from a wide array of small plates and sample a variety of different flavors.

After an 11 year successful run, Mako closed his Beverly Hills location and has focused his creativity at his other more authentic Japanese style restaurant called Robata-Ya, located in the heart of little Japan town at 2004 Sawtelle in West Los Angeles.

In 2008 Mako teamed up with partner Dennis Mao who he had been buying his exclusive, premium "jidori" chicken from for over 20 years. This partnership has enabled Mako to offer the freshest traditional yakitori /robata items, along with a special board that showcases some of his contemporary fusion blends that have earned Mako his loyal following and superb reputation.

Mako's latest inspiration Ju Ju Ya is scheduled to open in March 2014. He will be creating a tapas style menu with a strong focus on fresh seafood. The upscale casual restaurant will serve both lunch and dinner and is located in Palos Verdes.
